Homemade Windex (All Purpose Cleaner)

  • Cleans glass and mirrors beautifully.
  • Window cleaner
  • Cleans tile floors amazingly well - simply spray ON the floor and mop - it does not leave streaks.

Our Homemade Windex is ideal for when you get that call that someone is "in the neighborhood" and wants to stop by. Grab a bottle, spray your sink, toilet bowl and clean the mirror really quick in the bathroom. Move on to your kitchen counters while the kids do a quick stash and dash in the living room. Waaala - instant clean!

While not an eco-friendly recipe, Homemade Windex is one of the few products still in our home - because it works SO well. When we figure out a replacement for this - I will definitely post it!

Homemade Windex

Ammonia (Non-sudsing)

Rubbing Alcohol (buy in the two packs at Sam’s or Costco)

Large Spray Bottle or old Windex bottle

Homemade Windex Full Strength Recipe: Take the spray bottle and fill 9/10 with rubbing alcohol. Fill final 1/10 with ammonia. Put lid on carefully, tighten and give a shake, turning your head away. This is a potent cleaner that is inexpensive and homemade – but not natural. It is one of the few non-natural cleaners I use.

Windex Dilluted Recipe: Take the spray bottle and fill 4/10 with rubbing alcohol. Fill final 1/10 with ammonia, making 1/2 a bottle of full strength Windex. Fill with water, then put lid on carefully, tighten and give a shake, turning your head away. Dilluted Windex works well, with far fewer strong fumes.

Optional Natural Scents

Add a few drops of essential oil for a fresh smell. Try lavender for calming, or wintergreen, spearmint or peppermint to rev you up when you mop.

Cleans glass, windows, tile, tile floors, and metal.

If you would like to strip your wood cabinets, spray them and rub the finish away. Ask my how I know this? While trying to clean a spot on my old kitchen cabinets, I enthusiastically gave them a spray of this cleaner and scrubbed. I was impressed with the amount of “dirt” I scrubbed off, until I realized I had taken the paint off. We ended up using this solution to strip our cabinets of their “pickled” or “white washed” finish. The wood underneath was gorgeous! I love it when the Lord redeems a mistake.
