Survey on WHERE your homeschool kids have GONE to college — Please help expand options for ALL homeschoolers!

I am doing a quick survey to see WHERE your homeschool graduates have GONE to college! Informal, for personal information on a project I am working on that will help all homeschoolers with college options! It will be posted on my blog.  I really want to know exactly WHICH options homeschooled kids are choosing! Please, please cut and paste and forward this on to all of your homeschool friends who have graduated kids! If you have graduated several kids, just answer per kid, if you would be so kind!

If your kids have graduated and gone to college could you please send me a quick email lisa@theprudentwife.com and answer the following questions:

College options while in high school

  • Did you pursue dual enrollment options (Jr. and Sr. year in high school – enrolling in college courses that counted double for high school credit?)
    • If so, how many?
  • Did your child take CLEP tests?

College After Homeschool Graduation

  • Did your child attend Junior College/Community College?

·         Private?

·         Public?

  • Did your child pursue Distance Learning?
  • Did your child attend a State School (UCLA, UT,)?
  • Did your child attend a private college or university?
  • Did your child attend a Christian college of university?

Cost Questions

  • Was cost a big factor in undergrad education?
  • Did you encourage your child to attend college debt free?

Any other information you would like to include would be most appreciated! We thank you for participating in this INFORMAL survey that I will happily publish! This will greatly help ALL homeschoolers!

How Do I Get My Homeschooler in College??

Filed under :College for Homeschoolers, Homeschooling

We are so glad you asked! Covenant College has prepared one of the most comprehensive sites I have seen for the homeschooled student! Homeschoolers can find out everything from credit hours to admission stats!

Introduction
Covenant College welcomes the opportunity to work with the growing population of home -schooled students! The percentage of new students at Covenant who were home -schooled in high school has risen from 4% in 1995 to 17% in 2004. Covenant College is a Christ-centered institution of high education, emphasizing the liberal arts. Covenant is committed to the Bible as the written Word of God, providing educational services from a reformed Christian perspective to our students in an ever-changing culture. We have organized information below under topics that are frequently asked about by home -schooled students.

High School Course Distribution and Testing Requirements
Covenant requires a minimum high school grade point average of 2.50. Your high school curriculum should include at least 16 units, each unit representing one year of satisfactory work in a particular subject. It is recommended that the units be distributed as follows:

English 4 units
Mathematics 3 units (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or Trigonometry)
History and Social Studies 2 units
Natural Science 2 units
Foreign Language 2 units of the same language
Electives 3 or 4 units

As with all applicants, we require a minimum SAT I score of 1500 or an ACT (with optional essay) score of 21. Please have your official test scores sent directly to Covenant College by using our college code numbers (6124 for the SAT or 3951 for the ACT). These scores may also be included on an official transcript from an accredited home school organization.

Transcripts
We will need a complete transcript of all your high school work for 9th through 12th grades. This may be submitted from an umbrella organization or from the teaching parents to Covenant’s Admissions Office. The transcript should include the following:

Years of study Grading scale
Course titles Cumulative grade point average
Letter grades Graduation date
Credits or carnegie units completed

If you have information that should be shared which does not fit on a concise transcript, please attach an addendum to relay the additional information (e.g. portfolio material, running bibliography of resources by year, listing of extra-curricular activities). We have developed a proposed format and a sample transcript in a Microsoft Word format that you are welcome to download for your use and to share with your fellow home-schoolers.

Covenant seeks to attract “well-rounded” students. When we evaluate your file for admission and financial aid, we will take into consideration your demonstrated Christian commitment, leadership, GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and extracurricular activities. We recommend that you keep a list of high school activities and include that information on your Academic Evaluation or an addendum to be included with your transcript.

Dual Enrollment
If you are completing any dual enrollment courses (college-level courses which will be used for both high school and college credit), please be sure to indicate the name of the college on your Application for Admission. Your dual enrollment coursework should be included on your high school transcript. In order to determine transfer credit, we will also need an official college transcript and catalog (or URL for the course descriptions) for each college-level course.

Academic Reference
All students who apply to Covenant College must submit an Academic Reference form completed by someone who knows them in an academic setting. The form cannot be filled out by a parent or relative. You may ask another teacher, tutor, music instructor, coach, or even a Sunday School teacher to fill out this form. While the required form must be completed by someone other than a relative, we welcome any additional comments from your parents which will help us get to know you better as a student. Your parent (or parents) are welcome to complete a letter of recommendation in addition to, but not instead of, the Academic Reference Form.

Financial Aid Eligibility
If you plan to apply for any type of federal financial aid (Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Work Study, Perkins Loan, Stafford Loan or PLUS Loan), you will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students may complete an electronic FAFSA on the Internet at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA cannot be completed until after January 1. In the awarding of assistance packages, priority is given to accepted students whose FAFSA results and Covenant Application for Aid are received before March 31 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester. Additional information concerning the policies of financial assistance are available from our Financial Planning Office.

Home-schooled students are eligible for federal aid if:

1. the student has completed a high school program (evident with a graduation date on a transcript or a letter from the parents), or
2. the student is beyond the age of compulsory attendance of the state in which the college is located (16 years old in Georgia).

Home School Graduate Scholarship

  • Georgia home school graduates with a minimum score of 1650 on the SAT or minimum score of 25 on the ACT will receive a $3,000 Georgia Retroactive HOPE scholarship for the first year only. After attempting 30 academic hours and maintaining a 3.0 HOPE GPA, this scholarship will convert to the Georgia HOPE Scholarship. The Georgia HOPE Scholarship is available for the remaining academic years by maintaining the 3.0 HOPE GPA.
  • If the student’s GPA is not 3.0 or greater, the Georgia Retroactive HOPE Scholarship will be changed to a $3,000 Home School Scholarship for that freshman year.
  • All other home school graduates receive a $750 per year scholarship that is renewable if the student maintains a 3.0 institutional GPA.

If you have any further questions or need any additional information about Covenant’s policies for home-schooled students, you are welcome to contact our Admissions Office at 1-888-451-2683 or send an e-mail message to admissions@covenant.edu.
